I. Legal Background
Law School
I went to law school at Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles, California. Southwestern, and Loyola Law School around the corner, are known for producing many of the lawyers who participated in the O.J. Simpson trial in 1995.
I became interested in being a trial lawyer during my third year of law school when I clerked at the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. I was able to see the criminal justice system up close. Ironically, at the time I didn’t know I would become a personal injury lawyer. I should have because Torts, Products Liability, and Civil Procedure were always my best classes in law school.
However, one thing I knew at the time was that I wanted to open my own law firm and work for myself. I wanted to have a small firm like Perry Mason. That is why I moved back to Phoenix, Arizona after graduation. I figured I’d move back to Phoenix, Arizona because opening a law firm in the town I was born and raised in would be easier.
Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office
In 2000, I passed the Arizona State Bar exam and was sworn in as a newly minted attorney. For the next two years, I worked as a public defender at the Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office. During those two years, I represented people who could not afford to hire an attorney. I learned legal research, drafted hundreds of pleadings, and conducted approximately 25 jury and judge trials. I learned how to try a case, and much more in those two years.
These days from time to time I get asked, “should I go with a public defender, are they any good?” My answer is always yes, they’re good lawyers, just very busy.
In 2002, I opened the Law Offices of Derron D. Woodfork. Soon after opening my firm, I became interested in personal injury law. Some of my best friends were doctors and chiropractors and continually asked me to accept car accident cases. Consequently, I learned how to represent people in car accidents, and other personal injuries in 2003. I’ve been doing accident cases, and DUI cases ever since. I’ve represented over 5000 people in the past 17 years.
Current Professional Organizational Memberships
I am a member of the Arizona State Bar, the United States District Court for the District of Arizona, and the Maricopa County Bar Association.
What makes my law firm different?
There are thousands of lawyers in Arizona- what makes my firm different?
If you’re my client, I treat you like my friend.
You will see this on old versions of my website, I’ve always said no lawyer will ever care more about your case than I do. I’ve always said “trust comes first,” and I mean it.
II. Personal Background
My name is Derron Duane Woodfork. I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. Yes, I’m one of the few Arizona natives. In my free time, I enjoy a variety of activities, here are a few.
Travel
I love to travel. I’ve been to Russia, Ukraine, Croatia, Czech Republic, Dubai, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, Spain, London, Rome, Canada, Switzerland, Paris, Germany, Netherlands, Finland, and many states here in the US.
Blackjack
I’m a card-counting blackjack player. I could probably play blackjack professionally if it wasn’t such a slog to sit at blackjack tables for 6 hours at a time. If you’re wondering, I’m terrible at math – that’s why I went to law school. But, card counting is easy to learn, and just takes practice.
Reading
I love to read. Currently, I have approximately 500 books at my house, 100 on Kindle, and I have probably donated over 200 books over the years. I like books on Business, Finance, Sports, Law, Philosophy, and Travel.
Fitness
I try to keep in shape. I regularly go to the gym, and up until recently, raced bikes as a licensed amateur cyclist. Also, when the pounds start creeping on, I know how to lose weight using a low carb diet.
Wall Street
I’ve always been fascinated with Wall Street. I’ve been an active trader in the stock market (using Merger Arbitrage) in the past, and currently, I’m invested and using the cryptocurrency Bitcoin.
Also, I’ve taken the stockbroker’s Series 7 courses for fun and took and passed something called the Series 65 exam. The Series 65 exam is kind of like the stockbroker exam but you can sit for it without a brokerage sponsorship.
As you can see, I have a wide range of interests.
